Three ways to put a mic in someone's hands — or not
The right mic depends on who is speaking and what they're doing while they speak.
Hands-free: headset or collar mic
Trainers who point at slides, fitness instructors who demonstrate, teachers at a whiteboard, and pastors who gesture all need both hands. Our UHF wireless kit includes a headset mic and a lapel (collar) mic with one beltpack transmitter. The headset keeps volume steady when you turn your head. The collar mic is nearly invisible on stage and on camera.
Handheld wireless
For anchors, duets, felicitations and audience Q&A, a handheld mic is natural. People expect to hold it and pass it around. Our 1000W speaker includes two wireless handheld mics, and the 2000W PA speaker includes one wireless and one wired.
Wired
A wired mic is simple and reliable when the speaker stands in one place, such as a podium, a cake-cutting spot or a karaoke corner. Our 100W speakers include one.
Every mic needs a speaker
Microphones don't make sound on their own. If your venue has a sound system with a mic input, we will connect to it. If not, rent a speaker sized for your audience.
Getting clean sound
- Keep mics behind the speaker. Pointing a live mic at a speaker causes feedback.
- Hold handhelds close to the mouth and lower the volume, rather than holding them far away and turning up.
- Switch off mics that aren't in use.
FAQs
Do I need a speaker with the mic?
Yes. A microphone needs a speaker, PA or mixer to be heard. Rent one of ours or confirm your venue has a sound system with a mic input.
What is a collar mic?
A collar mic, also called a lapel or lavalier mic, is a small mic clipped to a collar or shirt so the speaker’s hands stay free.
Can I use these mics with my laptop?
No. The wireless kit is not compatible with laptops or MacBooks. For video calls, use a USB microphone.
Can two people use the headset kit at once?
No. It has one transmitter. For two people speaking, the 1000W speaker includes two wireless handheld mics.
